Toyota increases Europe sales by 18,671 units (4.6%) in first half-year, catching up after earthquake

  • Healthy sales for Toyota Motor Europe of 425,639 vehicles in first half-year
  • Toyota vehicle sales of 403,656, up 3% from first half of 2010
  • Lexus vehicle sales of 21,983, up 42% from first half of 2010
  • Vehicle delivery time returns to normal for customers

Didier Leroy, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe (TME), said: “We are happy with the positive results for the first half of this year after a strong first quarter. The upward sales trend we see this year demonstrates the strength of our product line-up, especially with our hybrids. It also shows the fighting spirit of everyone at Toyota, both in Europe and worldwide, and the great relationship we have with all our suppliers who worked hard, together with us, to minimise supply concerns from the March Earthquake.”

He added: “We are now speeding up delivery to meet customer orders and, at a minimum, to reclaim our planned volumes through the rest of the year. We are confident to increase our sales volume on a yearly basis.”

Production volume for Toyota in Europe returned to 100% level since early June, and close to normal levels in Japan. In order to satisfy customer demand for Toyota and Lexus vehicles, additional vehicle shipments have been scheduled. In July, 5,000 extra vehicles will be delivered to Europe. Customers ordering Toyota and Lexus vehicles can expect a fixed and accurate delivery date for their orders, approximately two months for European-built models and three to four months for vehicles imported from Japan.

Toyota vehicles

Demand for Toyota vehicles continued to grow with total half-year sales reaching 403,656, an increase of 3% compared to 2010. In particular, the Auris family (including the Auris full hybrid) saw sales of 55,222 vehicles, up 22% from 2010.

The Toyota Corolla sedan performed well once again with sales of 35,937, up 44% from 2010. Sales of the RAV4 and Land Cruiser – the legendary off-roader celebrating its 60th anniversary this year – both increased by some 20% with sales of 38,158 and 21,636 respectively.

The all-new, third generation Toyota Yaris will make its debut during the second half of 2011, with Toyota’s manufacturing facility in Valenciennes, France currently ramping up to produce Toyota’s newest product.

Lexus vehicles

Spurred on by the new premium compact CT 200h in the first quarter of 2011, Lexus sales increased by 42% compared to 2010 with sales of 21,983 vehicles. The Lexus CT 200h saw first half-year sales of 7,586, more than doubling its first quarter result.

Hybrid vehicles

Cumulative sales of Toyota and Lexus full hybrid vehicles totalled 46,121 during the first half of 2011 (11% of all vehicle sales), an increase of 31% from the previous year, with the Auris full hybrid and Lexus CT 200h making up nearly half of the full hybrid sales. With 10 new or renewed full hybrid models joining the product line-up by the end of 2013, Toyota and Lexus will be fully equipped to cater to the desires of European customers for environmentally friendly and fuel efficient vehicles offering peace of mind motoring.
